This 2021 talk, organized by W Type Foundry, was the first occasion on which I presented my research on spacing and the design of limited-width typefaces. The main topics were mechanical spacing, rhythm programming, Euclidean rhythms, Frutiger and monospaced typefaces, my typeface CF Memoria (now Crónica), keyboards, and other forms of mechanical writing, a poem about that, Frank E. Blokland’s theory, Expert class type design on Plantin Moretus Institute, and my revival of Kis.
